Water treatment

Water treatment or water treatment is the process of improving the quality of water in various ways for subsequent use or discharge. Wastewater from petrochemicals and refineries is highly toxic and poses a serious environmental hazard. Cleaning them is a complex process that requires proper step-by-step cleaning, as by-products can be volatile, toxic and explosive.

In many cases, the treatment of such effluents requires a combination of treatment methods to remove oils, oil films, organic matter, heavy metals and salts.

The main types of unidentified petroleum hydrocarbons in water: 

  • fuel oil impurities; 
  • gasoline pollution; 
  • kerosene pollution; 
  • impurities of petroleum oils.

Oil impurities are divided into categories: 

  • easily separable (when combined with water, an emulsion is formed, which can be easily removed); 
  • difficult to remove (are in a droplet (coarse) state, the most common type of oil pollution); 
  • soluble.

Wastewater treatment methods for oil products and petrochemicals

The main methods for purifying wastewater from impurities of oil and oil products are: 

  • mechanical methods (retention, averaging, settling; centrifugal removal; filtration); 
  • chemical methods (neutralization, oxidation, coagulation); 
  • physicochemical techniques (coagulation, flotation, adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, rectification, evaporation, distillation (evaporation), hyperfiltration (reverse osmosis) and ultrafiltration, crystallization, electrocoagulation); 
  • biological methods of purification (using the ability of various microorganisms to break down and assimilate harmful impurities).
